Week 1:Quadriptych

Case Studies

This weeks lecture gave an insight in to five different studio practices. Exploring who they are, what they do, where they're from, why design and who they have adapted or not to the changes within the industry itself.

Intro Design is a well established creative studio based in London that has had to adapt to the ever changing field of design. Julian House and Adrian Talbot both have many years of experience within the field of graphic design. they are both traditional designers working in the filed of typography, illustration and animation. The interest in design comes from how words and pictures can tell a story with a limited amount of elements. They have a rather unusual way of working where they each have their own individual styles and each have their own clients. giving little collaboration elements to their work.

Sarah Boris is an independent graphic designer based in London. Her focus is on editorial and branding visual identities. being based in London is a great source of inspiration as it is a buzzing city with lots of exhibitions and things to visual capture your focus. Sarah is strongly influenced by people and the culture around her which makes London a great source if inspiration. she sees design as a function and aesthetic, a way of communicating to an audience. Adapting to a more digital work base isn't yet a viable option due to the demand of work already as an independent designer. finding time adopt a new approach isn't necessary just yet.

Tom and Kris from regular practice are two designers that are relatively new to having their own studio having met whilst studying their masters degree and set up regular practice once graduating. They are both interested in type centric design as they find type helps fuel their expression. Based in east London they share a studio space and are surrounded by many other creatives, having the potential to lead to further collaboration. Having only been running for a short while regular practice has had to adapt to a professional world from an education one, meeting client briefs, project managing and the basic running of a studio. The field of design is a rewarding one having an outcome at the end of a project. it is a personal process from how you approach project. the constant change in design practice is a necessity to keep interested and to be constantly learning.

Sam Winston was drawn to design and typography as he struggled with words and communicating though language due to his dyslexia and found design to be a compelling way to challenge that. The publishing industry is very diverse and He found he was looking for commissions for clients rather than employment as he wanted to explore his own design and publications
